Multi-disciplinary opera shows the Chinese precursor of the Cinderella fairy tale

Alex Ho, Julia Cheng en Muziektheater Transparant (UK/BE)

Cinderella, one of the best-known European fairy-tales, was probably put in writing for the first time by the Italian author Giambattista Basile in the 17th century. However, it is a version of a much older narrative that we find in various cultures throughout history. For instance, a story called Ye Xian from the Tang Dynasty that was recorded in the early ninth century. The multidisciplinary opera Untold presents this Chinese precursor of Cinderella in a contemporary classical multicultural setting using music and movement.

The original Chinese tale has a familiar narrative arc whereas Untold adds new plot twists as well as contemporary classical music, movement, and Chinese as well as western instruments. A gripping performance that fuses various genres, art forms, and cultures.

Untold is part of the O. urban project Dit is Rotterdam, which was awarded the Fedora Opera Prize 2023.

“The composer Alex Ho is an up-and-coming talent in the world of classical music. Untold strikes a perfect balance between eastern and western music.” – Guy Coolen, artistic director O.

Locatie
