Lullaby
Lullabies for the revolution
Studio Minailo & Laura Bohn (NL)
The monodrama Lullaby focuses on a mother trying to sing a lullaby that will rock her baby to sleep. Her attempts are drowned out by howls of protest flooding through the window. She is increasingly agitated as the protest continues to swell. The mother is trapped between her safe inner world and the need to participate in the revolutions that are taking place outside. Can she soothe her child as the fight for his future rages all around her?
This music theatre performance has been written for the much-lauded soprano Laura Bohn. Composer Kamala Sankaram wove a kaleidoscopic soundscape out of a meditative lullaby, protest songs, and jazzy rhythms. Guillermo Calderón’s text evokes the struggle between inner and outer worlds. Cocreator and director Sjaron Minailo translates the dramatic monodrama into an opera that unfolds like a thriller bearing his characteristic visual and atmospheric minimalist signature.
