DOLLS

Absurd opera parodies in which Barbie dolls play the lead

Sirje Aleksandra Viise (EE)

The Estonian-American singer Sirje Viise performs famous operas, all by herself, on the smallest stage of the festival while enlisting the help of dozens of Barbie dolls and a GI Joe. Viisse herself does all the voices, roles, instruments, sets, costumes, videos, and interviews. DOLLS is a performance that reduces the absurdity of grandiose opera to a scale of 1:6. The satirical and feminist performance is a reaction to drastic cutbacks. With a sixth of the money and effort, you can still enjoy a full opera. You’ll also be delighted to discover that you only need a sixth of your usual attention span.

Every festival day, a different opera will be parodied in DOLLS. Allow yourself to be surprised!

“Sirje boldly makes fun of opera traditions as she finds new angles in a stylishly satirical manner. O. is lucky to have her!” – Tobias Kokkelmans (dramaturgy O.

Locatie
