Trouble in Tahiti
Swingin’ chamber opera about the fortune and misfortune of a perfect american couple
Studio PBA (BE)
‘Morning sun kisses the windows…’
In an idyllic American suburb, Sam and Dinah have everything they need to be happy – a house, a car, household appliances and a child – but they’re not.
A chamber opera full of swing, for which Leonard Bernstein wrote both the libretto and the music in 1951, during… his honeymoon. The team at Studio PBA (Palais des Beaux-Arts de Charleroi, Belgium) have come up with a zany version that underlines the extent to which Sam and Dinah are victims of a social ideal that they themselves help to reinforce, and makes the vocal trio that accompanies them a permanent observer of their misfortunes.
“Trouble in Tahiti is one of my favourite works. A little gem from the composer of West side story. A family drama with great music and super moving.” – Guy Coolen, artistic director O.
