The People’s Cabaret (CANCELLED)

Protest songs from the 1920s provide the soundtrack for the tumultuous 2020s

Luke Styles & Jessica Walker

CANCELLED: The public previews of The People’s Cabaret during O. in Theater Zuidplein on Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 August have been cancelled. Due to stricter travel restrictions to and from the United Kingdom.

Singer & author Jessica Walker and composer Luke Styles hold up a mirror for the unsettling times we live in. They are creating a pioneering contemporary work by integrating some of the great original cabaret songs from the 1920 s and 1930s, newly arranged by Styles, into a hypermodern song cycle about discrimination, freedom of opinion, and the rise of fake news. Expect to be shocked, entertained, and triggered in equal measure on a night of thought-provoking staged songs, dripping with acerbic humour.

Owing to the corona virus, the performance cannot premiere in its final form until 2022. However, that will not deter the artists who are involved in this project! Artists, hands-on experts, and activists from the UK and Rotterdam are meeting each other online in order to start creating texts and songs. During O., you get to see the fist pilot.

“Together with people from Rotterdam, Luke and Jessica breathe new life into a cabaret-like opera from the roaring twenties as they tell stories that remain relevant today.” – Tobias Kokkelmans (dramaturgy O.)

Locatie
