Taking Down Clara F. Gorge
Moving and musical exploration of the role you play in your own life
Thyra Jansen (NL)
In Taking Down Clara F. Gorge, theatre-maker and musician Thyra Jansen combines their love for the popular chick flick genre with a queer perspective. Inspired by the bull-sweet American high school films of the 2000s, they and two musicians create a coming-of-queer musical. At first glance, the show looks like a typical chick flick, complete with cheerleaders, dramatic break-ups and a school band. But, as Thyra plays the story, who gets caught up in the scenes and the question arises: is this still a movie, or does this all have to do with me?
With humour, music and self-reflection, Thyra explores how the traditional chick flick genre allows space for queer stories, which are often overlooked. By weaving their own story into this setting, Thyra shows that queer people belong just as much in this world of superficial dramas, stereotypical gender roles and heteronormative storylines.
This show is a reclaiming of the genre, with Thyra showing how, despite their often limited frameworks, these films can open up space for new perspectives and identities. Taking down Clara F. Gorge offers a fresh, playful take on popular culture and invites queer people to identify with what is often seen as ‘mainstream’ entertainment. A moving and musical exploration of the role you play in your own life.
“Thyra puts the classic ‘mean girl’ from your favourite chick flicks in a new light. And what if that chick flick was a queer musical? Thyra, with their band, shows that it can be done. A delightful performance with rattling drums and guitars.” – Roos Geelhoed, marketer O. and Theater Zuidplein
