Re:master Opera

Scroll through Sandberg Institute students' experimental marathon

Sandberg Instituut, Sjaron Minailo (NL)

Re:master Opera is a group of artists from different disciplines who have collectively explored the modern form of opera between 2022 and 2024 under the guidance of Sjaron Minailo. The two years of the master’s program concluded with a period of individual research, with each student integrating the collective making experiences into their own practice. These individual short works make up the graduation performances of Re:master Opera, which you can sample at O. on Saturday 25 May!

Each student will present a work ranging from musical theater and performance to installations, films and mixed-media presentations. The themes are as diverse as the group itself: from composing with loud screams to embodying the body without a body. A common thread through all the works is the focus on sound and music, both artistically and culturally.

The new generation in the spotlights
Saturday 25 May, new musical theater makers reveal their work to an audience at the Kaap. At Theater Walhalla and Conny Janssen Danst, among others, a diverse group of makers will gather for a day full of creativity, talent and energy. Some have only just graduated, others are about to leave school, and a few have left school longer ago. One thing they have in common is a bold take on musical theatre. From a rebellious, feminist reinterpretation of a classic play to a relentless crash test of traditional musical, the variety is wide. All of these creators are ready to shatter the status quo and redefine the world of music theatre.

“The Sandberg’s thematic masters often produce interesting work. So the result of a master exploring the opera genre is not te be missed at O.” – Anne van de Wetering, festival dramaturge O.

Locatie
