One Man Show
Two women fantasise about what it is like to be a man
VOX Muziektheater (NL)
In an attic full of toys and everyday objects, two women from days gone by search for the meaning of masculinity. Out of sight of the man of the house, they give shape to their curiosity: What is it like to be a man? What makes a man a man?
With humour and sharpness, they dissect objects that make boys ‘real men’ – a toy gun, an action hero, a toolbox – and question how these objects define the image of masculinity. At the same time, they show how womanhood too has limitations.
Electronic music and baroque singing merge, while a man on electric guitar accompanies them. In this playful and sometimes painfully topical performance, familiar images are turned upside down and you are made to think with fresh eyes about how you yourself are shaped into either a man or a woman.
With humour, imagination and musicality, One Man Show shows how fluid and at the same time persistent ideas about masculinity can be.
