O. Lab: Bula Waya
Musical docu-reconstruction about a forgotten Curaçaoan rebel
Sean Hauser (NL)
O. Lab: Bula Waya is a musical-docu reconstruction in which Sean Hauser charts the radical life of his great-grandfather Medardo de Marchena. A forgotten rebel lone wolf in the 1920s and 1930s who fought for the emancipation of the Afro-Curaçao people. In search of the relevance of his work for the present. During O. Sean, together with percussionist Denzil Tromp, will show a first experiment within O. Lab. to look ahead with you.
Research question: What role can the Tambú play in sharing the story of my great-grandfather Medardo de Marchena, who waged his anti-colonial battle in Curaçao in the 1920s and 1930s?
‘As a Curaçaoan, I feel it is my duty to do everything within my reach for this island, my beloved homeland. With this sacred goal in mind, with this ardent desire, I make use of my pen to bundle all my ideas / to melt them together in the crucible of idealism and then pour them into the desired form of Fatherland Love’.
– Ignorancia o Educando un pueblo (1929), Medardo de Marchena
