Love and Lust
Feel like an adolescent in love
Esther Kouwenhoven & Mark Toxopeus (NL)
In Love and Lust you will join on a journey through arias and songs in different languages, but with the language of love and lust as the lingua franca. Love and lust are two aspects of life that everyone has to deal with, but they are not always easy. The program starts with the dreamy aria “Depuis le jour” by Charpentier in which the main character of the opera, Louise, sings of her love for Julien and how happy she is since the day she gave herself to him. Mentally as well as physically. Next you will hear “Trois Chansons de Bilitis,” a collection of erotic prose poems by French writer Pierre Louÿs, set to music by Claude Debussy.
After the French portion, we switch to Italian with the seductive aria “Deh vieni non tardar” from Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro. In it, Susanna, dressed as the Countess, tries to seduce the Count, making Figaro jealous. We continue with “Quando m’en vo” from Puccini’s La Bohème. An aria in which Musetta sings confidently about the fact that when she walks down the street, everyone looks at her from head to toe. Will she manage to impress her ex Marcello?
We will conclude with a German block in which we will perform Berg’s “Sieben frühe Lieder. Many German-Romantic elements are featured: the magic of the dark forest, the ominous rustling of the woods and the voice of the night as the voice of love. As a finale, the aria “Meine Lippen sie küssen so heiβ” by Franz Léhar. A real bouncer full of passion and expression of love and lust. Giuditta sings of the intense feelings and sensations, including physical attraction, that she experiences when someone special is around.
