Close to Harmony

Intense a cappella performance with wrenching desires

King Sisters (NL)

As closely linked as the lives of these three sisters are, they make their voices sound in harmony. But if you listen carefully, you will hear that one voice sounds just a little off. The closer they get, the harder they have to fight for their consonance. How close is too close? Where does it start to fray? And isn’t it precisely this abrasion that makes the relationship unique? In this physical, a cappella performance, the trio get close to – and maybe even ín – each other’s skin. Influenced by Meredith Monk, ritualistic part-song and close-harmony music, they expose their desires and fears of intimacy.

Together, sisters Joske (actress), Annelie (vocalist) and Marthe Koning (physical performer) form collective King Sisters. Using their singing voices as a starting point, they create artistic, non-ordinary musical performances in which they constantly challenge each other from their own disciplines. With their clear language of sound, they move and disturb you. This trio makes you feel that the personal, like your voice or your family, is directly linked to the world we live in.

“The King Sisters search for individual space within their intense sibling relationship. They show their family bond as an open wound on stage and also manage to express all this beautifully vocally.” – Anne van de Wetering, festival dramaturge O.

“Close to Harmony offers the three sisters every opportunity to show their versatility with their clear voices and range. That’s fascinating, from start to finish.”

Locatie
