Hypnotic harbour show about the endless flow of world trade
WUNDERBAUM (NL)
Every day an invisible tidal wave of goods flows into our country. From gas to rubber ducks, soy to vacuum cleaners – world trade never stands still. Everything travels, everything moves, everything crosses political and geographical borders. But where do all these items come from? How do they find their way to Rotterdam? And what does this incessant flow mean for us, the people in the middle of it?
Together with musician Moritz Bossmann (Käptn Peng & Die Tentakel von Delphi, theater collective Farn) and drummer Quartus Vlak, WUNDERBAUM brings a hypnotic and energetic performance in the harbor, in which they make tangible the endless movement of trade, transport and consumption. They create a musical list, a rhythmic archive of what enters the harbor. They categorize, organize, stack and sort – an attempt to get a grip on the chaos of the global economy. But the more they count, the bigger the flow seems to get. Their voices mingle with the sound of machinery, the rhythm of cranes and the pounding of ship engines. They sing and dance until they fall down, rise again and fall again. Because the flow never stops. The containers keep coming, the orders keep rolling in. It is never enough.
This performance is a musical journey through the world of transport and trade, in which the drastic radicality and absurdity of our consumption behavior are put to the test. Listen to the beats of the global economy and get carried away by the list of life.
