a night with QUEEN ANGELITO

Eclectic one-woman show about (self-)love

Orkater (NL)

Picture this: Nightclub Walhalla. A legendary concert in an intimate setting: a night with Queen Angelito! Tonight she takes you back to the loves she lost, the love she couldn’t lose because she never had it (yes you, daddy), but above all to the greatest love she found: the pure, shameless, unabashed love for herself. After all, if the love you feel for yourself is strong enough, it ultimately transcends the need for love from others, doesn’t it? Self-love-supremacy! Right…? Is surrender in love a weakness or an act of hope or courage? Or maybe even an act of resistance?

a night with QUEEN ANGELITO was written, performed and sung by ‘Ntianu Stuger (Volkskrant talent of the year 2023). Inspiration for this performance begins and ends with jazz legend Eartha Kitt; her music, her image of untouchability, but also her seemingly insatiable hunger for recognition and surrender. For this theatrical concert, Stuger draws on interviews with Kitt, but also on the Bible, All bout Love by bell hooks (the American professor Gloria Watkins), the aesthetics of Jhené Aiko and beliefs from the increasingly fast-growing online spirituality community.

Credits

Concept, text, play: Ntianu Stuger, final direction: Izaline Calister, arrangements: Rui Reis Maia, scenography: Ruben Wijnstok, costume: Valérie Pos, lighting design: Varja Klosse, text supervision: Esther Duysker, play coaching: Liesbeth Coltof.

‘Theatrical poetics of jazzy feminism’.

– De Theaterkrant (Critic’s choice)

‘Ntianu Stuger’s first solo performance with Orkater, seduces, hurts (in a delicious way) and is inspired by the life and work of singer and actress Eartha Kitt.’

– Het Parool

‘[…] She comforts and anoints these searching souls with her well-struck Insta-self-help English, interspersed with rock-solid songs and mildly vile interaction with the audience.’

– De Volkskrant

Locatie
