A Love Supreme
Powerful mix of artistic and historical layers
Rajae El Mouhandiz (NL/MA)
Rajae El Mouhandiz is an interdisciplinary creator: singer, composer and performing artist. She combines pop, soul, jazz and musical styles from her Maghrebian roots in her work. With deep documentary research and a strong connection to the spiritual and cultural history of music, Rajae tells stories that often go untold. Her work is a powerful blend of artistic and historical layers, which come together in her new performance A Love Supreme.
For this musical theater production, inspired by John Coltrane’s iconic album, Rajae explores the historical and musical connections between the Gnawa tradition from Morocco and jazz from the United States. Both styles of music have deep roots in the African diaspora and share a common creole origin. They act as spiritual and rhythmic bridges, born of traditions of resistance, connection and innovation.
Work in Progress
A Work in Progress is a performance in the making. A performance that is not yet finished, but that the creators would like to share with audiences. As a visitor, you get a peek into the rehearsal room and help artists on their way to a fully-fledged performance, which will premiere in a future edition of O.
“Rajae brings renowned Gnawa master Maalem El Gourd to O for this intimate musical session, and to think that this is ‘only’ another step on the way to a full-fledged musical theatre performance…” – Hans Blik, business director O.
