O. Statement Ukraine

Update 07/03

“The internationally renowned Greek director Elli Papakonstantinou has been collaborating for the last year with the great Ukrainian ensemble of young contemporary music artists Nova Opera. The rehearsals started in December 2021 with the aim of her new project to premiere in the Netherlands at O. in Rotterdam on May 21-22 this year with a planned tour to follow of historic sites in Ukraine, specifically, the Kyiv Opera House in June, the Odessa Opera House in August, and the Kharkiv National Philharmonic in September.

We have been working with The National Herald did an interview with director Elli Papakonstantinou of Eros, which hopefully will premiere at O. It includes a Ukraine cast, from which one is missing, another one is playing Beethoven in a bomb shelter. The Kiyiv Opera house has been attacked by Russian bombs. O. is from a city that was almost completely destroyed in WWII. We know how you feel. Stay strong. We will do everything to welcome you in Rotterdam. Arts and collaboration will always be stronger than barbarism and ego’s. Music theatre is strong in Ukraine. In recent years we’ve had several guests from the beautiful country. In May O. wants to present Chornobyldorf, one of the winners of Music Theatre Now. Besides that we’ve been working on Eros, a collaboration between Rotterdam, Greece and Ukraine for some time.”

“We have a very strong connection with the Ukraine, a country which has a very vibrant music theatre scene. Those artists have been our guest and will be our future guests. Through mutual exchange we met some wonderful people that touched our hearts. For example Chornobyldorf by Roman Grygoriv and Illia Razumeiko is one of the winners of our Music Theatre Now competition. Our aim still is to present this wonderful performance, because bringing it now, in these times, means so much more. Peace is a human right. Freedom is essential for creativity. Our thoughts are with you. Especially now.”
