O. 2023 takes place in numerous locations in Rotterdam from Wednesday 17 May through Saturday 27 May 2023. The international festival for opera, music, and theatre offers unique site-specific performances and exciting productions in venues around the city. The festival comprises many different performances and concerts; from works-in-progress to world premieres by young makers and well-known names. O. can best be enjoyed with a day ticket, which lets you experience the festival all over Rotterdam from early morning until late at night for just €35 per day.

The festival opens on Wednesday 17 May with First Night, a full-evening programme featuring ‘AfrOpera’ The Golden Stool by Toneelhuis & LOD music theatre, directed by Gorges Ocloo. That day will also see a  range of festival sneak peaks in Theater Rotterdam. On Thursday 18 May (Ascension Day, a Dutch public holiday), Schouwburgplein and its surroundings become the backdrop for the urban opera Here & There that brings together Rotterdam stories and talents from different boroughs. Prisoner of the State is performed in De Doelen’s Great Hall on O.’s first Saturday night. This impressive modern classic by the American composer David Lang, based on Beethoven’s opera Fidelio, will exclusively be performed in Rotterdam.

Club Gewalt celebrates its 10th anniversary during the second half of the festival. The ensemble will treat the audience to a new performance and curate what’s happening in Theater Rotterdam for three nights in a row. Wunderbaum plays a site-specific performance in a Rotterdam retirement home; the only appropriate backdrop for its tragicomic light opera radio play Boze Bejaarden (Enraged Elderly). The hugely successful Steef’s O. Show returns to the old Luxor Theatre, comprising three nights of ‘opera cabaret’ created by Steef de Jong with the 70-piece Codarts Symphony Orchestra as well as special guests Brigitte Kaandorp and Alex Klaasen. The O. programme also includes the ambitious music theatre piece Between Two Lights by the Chinese-American composer Huang Ro, performed by the Netherlands Chamber Choir.

The full programme will be announced in early April when the loose tickets will go on sale. Day tickets (for Thurs 18 through Sun 21 & Sat 27 May) and Passe Partouts (Wed 17 through Sat 27 May) can already be purchased.

Locatie
